Up To Relevant Agencies To Investigate Dr M, Says PM ::

Some of the pre-requisites for a good leader is to be decisive, firm and to the point when issuing directives. You don’t say fix that problem, overcome that problem, see what can be done, sort it etc..etc. The leader leads and he does so by example, you don’t except everyone to be thinking the way the leader thinks.

I had the misfortune of being the second in command in an organisation and my superior was this new graduate who was posted there to run the unit. He was very active, proud of his new found position, the only set back being he failed to learn the work from experienced hands like me or others. I laughed the day he boasted to his friend he had signed so many letters today, mentioning a number. How many of the letters that he had signed was not important, the clerks who drafted the memos would have done a good job and the Chief Clerk would have gone through the contents, but the signatory, did he understand the subject matter before signing.

Another incident. This man was trained in England. Came back to Malaysia and at that time I was slogging away as it was just some years after I had joined the job. This man was a leader. Any letter, the contents of which he was not sure, he did not sign, but called up the Clerk, made him explain, before attaching his signature. The second man was a leader, he knew after some months how things operate and you could not pull the wool over his eyes as you could do with the first man who thought he knew much.

Similarly in the case of Badawi who made a ambiguous statement, up to the relevant agencies to investigate, smacks of indecisive leadership and uncertainty. He has gone through the mill, years of civil service, years of being a Minister, and I am sure now he has obtained knowledge of what he is to do. He is talking on behalf of the agencies who would have had to deal with Mahathir. He is not talking like the No.1 he is. He need not open or close files. We are talking of directives. If you are not sure, don’t talk, check your facts before speaking. If you read the report through, it is not even known, what agency or department must take action.

Don’t forget if no action is taken the people hold you responsible, not the agencies, who the people don’t even know anything about.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Sunday it was up to the relevant agency or department to take appropriate action on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for alleged interference in the administration of justice when he was prime minister, if the allegations were true.
He said any allegation or accusation backed by proof would be considered by the agency or department concerned for investigation and action. “If proven…we must not close eyes (and) say cannot (take action). If proven that it is (known), the matter must be considered by the government, important departments and agencies and if investigative action is needed, severe action must be taken.
“That is the approach we take for everyone,” he said.
Abdullah said this to reporters after being asked about DAP chairman Karpal Singh calling on Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail to direct investigations into reports lodged against Dr Mahathir for alleged interference in the administration of justice.
Before this, Abdullah who is also Umno president, had delivered his address at a briefing for party members at the Putra World Trade Centre here. In a statement on Friday, Karpal had said that at the trial of former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former anti-corruption agency (ACA) director-general Datuk Shafee Yahya had testified before High Court judge Ariffin Jaka in June 2000, that Dr Mahathir had ordered him to close a file and that several reports had been made against him (Dr Mahathir) over the matter.
Answering another question, Abdullah said it was not his job to open a file on a certain case and that it was the duty of an agency like the ACA.
“I don’t open files…that’s not my business to open a file on anybody. It is a matter for any agency…ACA…others,” he said.
