Samy says no to cabinet post

MIC President S Samy Vellu today said he would not be offering himself for a cabinet post in the new administration to be established by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Speaking to reporters today, Samy Vellu said that he would not be seeking a senatorship as a back way for him to return to the cabinet.

Samy Vellu has been MIC’s president since 1979. It is widely speculated that this would be his last term as the party president. The next party polls are due in 2009.

This was the most single worthy action by the MIC leader. He has acted and accepted the decision of the people and this will go a long way gaining the respect of the Indians – which he had lost completely. Congratulations Sir.

I suppose he had followed the trend set by the MCA leader. This will also ease the burden of Badawi in lining up his list of candidates for the cabinet. The trend set will also make it difficult for the Prime Minister to bring in UMNO losers by the back way. Let not the Senate be called members who failed in the elections. Let’s wait and see.
