Tourism Minister is a bit confused and she pleads with people, please remember Malay is the national language, and nobody can challenge that. She even goes to the extend, Malays have compromised many things for sake of unity and their patience had its limit. Another good soul Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Nik Safiah Karim comments it is tantamount to eroding the country’s national identity. She also asked a pertinent question why must other languages be elevated to be on par with the National language.

Both these ladies have been hibernating.

Remember Borhan our KL mayor, he knows all about getting approval from the cabinet. But here again the Culture, Arts and Heritage had its own mind, even over-ruling the cabinet, He puts up road signs in Jawi to help Arab tourists. So, who is wrong. Please check the City Council files.

No Need For Road Signs In Chinese :: Bernama.com

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) — Unnecessary.

That has been the general reaction to the move by a group of Gerakan members to put up road signs in Chinese in Penang Monday.

While some view the move as an exercise in futility, other see it as an attempt to challenge the position of Malay as the national language.

The group put up the signs at the Beach Street as well as at Burmah Road, Macalister Road, Carnarvon Street, Chulia Street and Jalan C. Y. Choy.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the Federal Constitution had stated it clearly that Malay is the national language.

“All official signs, therefore, should be in Malay. This is part of the social contract agreed upon by our forefathers and I hope no one will try to challenge that,” Azalina told Bernama when contacted.

She reminded those involved that the Malays had already compromised many things for the sake of unity but their patience had its limit.

Azalina also regretted the use of the “Visit Malaysia” logo without permission.

“We will see what action we can take in connection with the misuse of the logo,” she said.

Malay language expert Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Nik Safiah Karim said she could not agree with the action as it was tantamount to eroding the country’s national identity.

“A country must have its own identity and Malay is the national language. Why should we elevate other languages to be on par with the national language?” she asked.

Nik Safiah said even though the group claimed that the move was for the benefit of tourists, it should not be done at the expense of the national language.

“I don’t think road signs in Malay are difficult to read as they are written in Roman. Even if tourists have problems understanding them, their guides will be able to explain the meaning. They can also ask the locals,” she told Bernama.

She said those involved in putting up the road signs in Chinese should pause for a while and ponder which one was more important — safeguarding the country’s national identity or the other interests that they want to promote.

Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) secretary-general Mohd Nordin Awang said those involved should be clear about the position of the Malay language.

“All the while, there have been no problem with road signs in Malay. Why now?” he said, adding that the move had no justification whatsoever as it was merely for political purposes.

“Are the road signs a pressing issue or is there other motives behind it?” he asked.

Mohd Nordin said throughout Malaysia’s 51 years of nationhood, there had been no problems or conflict arising from road signs.

He said the action could also hurt the feelings of the Malays and affect the harmonious relations among the people.

MCA Youth secretary-general who is also Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said the road signs should not be made an issue.

In a multi-racial country, there was nothing wrong if other languages were used as road signs, he said. “I don’t think this is a deliberate attempt to offend the sensitivities of any group,” he said.

In Penang, local government, traffic management and environment executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow said the committee would send notice to Gerakan asking the party to remove the sign.

He said the state government had its own plan to put up multilingual road signs in certain places, particularly within the heritage site.

“We will apply to the local councils asking them to increase the number of road signs in languages other than Malay such as Mandarin, Tamil, English and Arabic for the benefit of tourists,” he told a news conference.

He said the federal government had approved an allocation to put up multilingual road signs in the island’s heritage area.

Balik Pulau Umno division chief Datuk Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the state Barisan Nasional had never discussed the move by Gerakan Youth.

He said such action should be stopped, lest it become a trend.

“Today it will be Gerakan. Tommorow, other parties may also put up their road signs.”

Tanjong Umno Youth chief Shaharrudin Hassan, meanwhile demanded that Malay should be the language for all road signs in the area.

“We are not satisfied with the action. We want the road signs to be in Malay,” he said.

YB Koid Teng Kuan,

Dear sir,

If you have nothing original to say, please keep quiet. This is my reaction to anyone trying to be clever when you are not one. MARK Twain, an acclaimed American author wrote: “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it
and remove all doubt”. So Sir, silence is golden when you are lost. Your voters, and people will still think you are intelligent, you have not opened your mouth.

You are still intelligent, apparently, and so next time you want to quote someone, please say it came from so and so. If I had been your teacher I would made you write a 1000 lines, “Don’t Copy”, but then you are a politician now.

I have a funny feeling that some new politicians who have found power are in a dilemma as to how they should respond.

The Deputy Chief Minister is alleged having used Government money to visit a foreign country last month. The foreign country was London and it is reported that his relationship with the Chief Minister is not too close.

He has taken a number of Angkatan Muda members, numbers unknown, supposedly on a commercial visit. Any how the group was less than ten, but Fairus calls it many.

The visit was unknown to the Chief Minister.

No person in his right mind will make an official visit without consent, as if taking a private holiday. Something is wrong.

Lim, take action fast  before Barisan Nasional says you have “embezzled” RM 30 million.

I thought castration for rapists was excessive, but after reading this the offender must be chemically castrated and left to die without treatment.

20yrs jail for raping five-year-old

KUANTAN: A Sessions Court here sentenced a timber cutter to a maximum of 20 years in jail and 20 strokes of the rotan for raping a five-year-old girl.

K. Kamalason, 47, pleaded guilty to the charge committed at a Chinese graveyard in Bukit Setongkol here at about 6.45pm on Dec 25, 2006.

In handing down the sentence on Tuesday, Sessions Judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain described the offence as serious, cruel and inhuman, adding that the future of the victim was a very bleak one indeed.

He ordered the sentence to run from Tuesday.

In his submission, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud said the offence was a case of aggravated violence as the victim not only sustained bodily harm but also suffered very serious internal injuries involving her uterus, intestines, private parts and anus.

“She was also traumatised by the whole ordeal and may not be able to lead a normal life. Her uterus has been badly damaged,” he said.

He asked for the court to impose a maximum sentence as the victim was a young girl and because the accused himself had two young children.

“How could he do such a thing when he himself has two children?” DPP Ahmad Fadhli said.

In mitigation, Kamalason who represented himself throughout the hearing, asked for a lighter sentence, saying he had a wife, a mother and two young children to take care of.

Penang Opposition Leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim, has difficulty in differentiating between embezzling and dereliction of duty. This chap must be from the most educated group that our Government is churning out in the thousands. Who ever said our Education is bad.

Get him a good dictionary, a bi-lingual one of course. Even a children’s one will do.

Penang accused of embezzling rakyat’s money

Penang accused of embezzling rakyat’s money
By CHRISTINA CHIN and NG SU ANN at the Penang State Assembly

GEORGE TOWN: Penang opposition leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim caused an uproar in the House when he accused the Pakatan Rakyat state government of “embezzling” RM30mil.

“The state says that it is trying to save money by flying economy class and implementing austerity measures but it is actually embezzling the people’s money by not collecting the illegal hawking and parking compounds issued before March 8,” said the Penaga assemblyman who twice described himself as a “good guy” in his debate on the motion of thanks on the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas’s speech.

State exco member Phee Boon Poh (DAP-Sungai Puyu) stood up to demand clarification from Azhar on how the state had embezzled the people’s money.

“The state’s duty is to collect the compounds but it did not, so that is menyelewenglah! Why are you taking care of those who are guilty? What about those who have paid, do they get a refund?” Azhar, who is state Umno secretary, retorted.

Phee then asked for a dictionary to clarify the meaning of the word, before urging the former for a retraction.

“We never received one sen of that money,” he said, to which Azhar replied, “Then where did the money go?”

Speaker Abdul Halim Hussain interjected, saying that the act did not constitute embezzlement.

Azhar claimed that he never accused the state of corruption (makan duit) and was referring to dereliction of duties.

Several Barisan Nasional and PR assemblymen joined the fray including Shabudin Yahya (BN-Permatang Berangan), Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya (BN-Teluk Bahang), A. Tanasekharan (DAP-Bagan Dalam) and Jagdeep Singh Deo (DAP-Datuk Keramat).

Jagdeep Singh, who called for Azhar to retract the statement under Order 46 (13) (c) and (d) of the State Legislative Assembly’s Standing Order, challenged Azhar to deny that he had made the accusation.

Datuk Jasmin Mohamed (BN-Sungai Dua) interjected, claiming that subsection (c) was not proper, as the words uttered did not cause hurt.

“Anyone’s feelings hurt?” he asked, prompting most PR assemblymen present to raise their hands.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urged Azhar to “be a gentleman” and admit that he had accused the state of embezzling money.

Tired of the bickering, Abdul Halim raised Order 28 and said that he would decide on whether Azhar should retract the statement.

“When I speak, you must all be quiet. Do not use the word menyeleweng any more. It is inappropriate,” he ruled.

What is this pipe dream, Toyo has. He wants to see Abdullah, (former premier) Dr Mahathir Mohamad, (deputy premier) Najib Abdul Razak, (PAS spiritual leader) Nik Aziz Nik Mat, (Anwar’s wife and PKR president) Dr Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail) and (PAS president) Abdul Hadi Awang seated at the same table.

Now, you will note that, Anwar has been left out of this elite group, although his wife is included. Anwar, as Toyo says, is supported by extremist Chinese and Indians through DAP and Hindraf. He should mind his words, he is implying that all Chinese and Indians who voted Pakatan Rakyat are extremists. He is surprised why the Chinese and Indians voted the opposition – they hated Barisan Nasional with a vehemence which Toyo will never understand, the unjust rule of Barisan Nasional for decades, made them sick and being apprehensive of the future wanted a change and rightly voted in the opposition. Toyo was one of the reasons, corruption, helping his cronies, destroying temples, and the rape of the environment, were under his account and I am surprised he goes around without a care in the world and without a conscience. I suppose it is asking him too much, he is a politician isn’t he.

Now back to the dream of his. The sun may rise in the west but this would not happen. Mahathir has dug a grave, deeper than the proverbial six feet for his nemesis Badawi and is just waiting for the latter to be buried and he waits to shovel the earth to end his hatred for the Prime Minster.

Badawi on the other hand has not taken any serious measures to defend himself, mindful that Mahathir is a just hot air which will turn cold on hitting the atmosphere.

Najib is squirming, nervous where his loyalty lies, with the ex Prime Minister, who supports him but lately showing impatience with his inactivity, or the present boss who holds him in a tight vice. What a pathetic situation to be in.

As for Nik Aziz and Hadi Awang, both are uncomfortable with one another, after the present overture of PAS and UMNO for a muzakarah or dialogue.

The lady Wan Azizah, a perfect gentlewomen may be the only one, who if all these politicians get together, may grace the table with a smile but with the husband out it would be a gesture without being happy.

So Toyo keep on dreaming, your pipe dream is dead even before it can begin.
