Malaysian Election, Lies And More Lies

Woman protests EC decision by going bald

Bravo Aunty Ah Mei. In my estimation, losing your “crowning glory”, especially in a woman speaks volumes of courage and determination. Many men can’t emulate your example. People must get angry, not to fight or create violence, but to act telling everyone you meet how dreadful are the Government decisions, like some small children using their ga ga language to convince the people. Come Badawi and gang give us better reasons and consider us as adults. We have been children too long.

Toh Ah Mei, or more fondly known as Aunty Ah Mei, felt betrayed and deceived when the Election Commission, in a shock decision, decided to scrap the usage of indelible ink for Saturday’s polls.

As a sign of protest, the 66-year old lifetime DAP member decided to shave her head bald to send a message to the people.

women shaving head spr protest 060308 shavingThe EC on Wednesday announced that it would not introduce the use indelible ink claiming that it had uncovered a plot by unnamed parties to ‘sabotage’ the polls by using smuggled ink to mark unsuspecting voters before they cast their ballot. The commission said this would have caused widespread confusion on polling day.

Nancy Khong, standing on a PKR opposition ticket for the Semambu state seat said that Aunty Ah Mei also felt that Pahang had not been attended to by the Barisan Nasional government during the past four years.

“There is no development in Pahang and Aunty Ah Mei hopes that the rakyat realises this and make the right decision on Saturday,” she told reporters while watching Aunty Ah Mei’s being shaved at a brief cremony in Kuantan.

Third time

Aunty Ah Mei went down on her knees and offered a prayer before her crowning glory was shaved off. Also present were Pahang PKR election candidates - Fuziah Salleh (Kuantan, parliamentary seat), Azan Ismail (Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat), and Siew Fook Chin (Teruntum state seat).

Aunty Ah Mei was compelled to demonstrate her disapproval again during the SJK(C) Damansara’s ‘Save Our School’ (SOS) mass signature campaign in 2001.

The sprightly lady said she will also be observing a three-day fast beginning today. “It is my hope and prayer that the ISA-detained Hindraf leaders will be released soon.”

The EC decision to scrap the usage of indelible ink has also resulted independent polls watchdog Mafrel announcing their withdrawal as EC-accredited observers.

The ‘quiet kid’ of Teluk Kemang

The ‘quiet kid’ of Teluk Kemang

Sothinathan is not above board. See this:

Sothinathan

The ‘quiet kid’ of Teluk Kemang

RK Anand | Mar 6, 08 11:53am

In his younger days, S Sothinathan never imagined that he would journey into the unhallowed realm of politics.

Even his former neighbours find it hard to believe that the quiet kid next door has rose up the ranks to become a deputy minister.

Sothinathan himself thought that he would end up as a lawyer or businessman.

sothinanthan teluk kemang 050308 generousBut destiny had grander plans for the Port Dickson-born lad who recalled going to school without a single cent in his pocket at times.

In 1999, the man considered by MIC members to possess the ‘Midas touch’ - party president S Samy Vellu - appointed Sothinathan as his political secretary and thus altered his fate.

The 47-year-old politician is now a vice-president in MIC, the incumbent for the Teluk Kemang parliamentary seat and deputy minister of natural resources and environment.

But the father of three insists that he never harboured much interest in political ambitions or positions. “It was entrusted upon me,” he told Malaysiakini when met in Port Dickson on Tuesday.

“Now, I just want to do my best to serve the people,” he added.

sothinanthan teluk kemang 050308 susyAnd according to his former neighbour R Susy, who has known Sothinathan since his youth, this is exactly what the politician has been doing.

“He is a nice man who has helped many people. But those who do not like him will say all sorts of things,” said the 52-year-old housewife whose family lived next to Sothinathan’s in a squatter settlement.

“He came from a very poor family. He was always a quiet boy who helped his mother a lot. Back then, we never thought that this kid would become such a big shot,” she added.

Susy also said that Sothinathan and his family have always been modest. “He never changed, he is still that quiet boy. His family is also humble and down to earth.”

Indian votes

While she is confident that the MIC vice-president would retain his seat, she however expressed concern over the sentiments of Indian voters.

She said opposition ceramah held in the seaside town - which is flooded with election posters - have been drawing a large Indian presence.

Echoing a similar view was G Asokan, 29, who works in a popular eatery in the heart of Port Dickson.

“It’s going to be tough. The people who come to the stall always talk about how the Indians are going to vote for the opposition this time around,” he said.

sothinanthan teluk kemang 050308 approachHowever, a policeman, attached to the local district police headquarters, predicts only a marginal swing as far as Indian votes are concerned.

“It is mostly the youths who are angry and the majority of them are not even registered voters. So what difference is it going to make?” he asked.

He also said Sothinathan would win based on the support from the Malays and Chinese who are the majority races in the constituency.

“As for the Indian votes, the opposition would have stood a better chance if they had fielded an Indian candidate.

“Some of the Indians are also worried that if the Malay PKR candidate wins, Umno would take the seat away from MIC in the next elections,” said the policeman who has been in the force for 32 years.

Strong support

Another voter, who wished to be known only as Lim, also affirmed that the incumbent commands strong support from the various races.

teluk kemang parliamentary seat“I agree with some of the issues raised by the opposition and so do many other Chinese voters here. But sometimes the candidate also matters. We have no problems with Sothinathan, he is very hard working,” said the 51-year-old businessman.

“But it is a different story with the Indians. They are not happy after the Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force) protest in Kuala Lumpur,” he noted.

Teluk Kemang has 60,186 voters. Of this, 40.6 percent are Malays, followed by Chinese (36.1 percent) and Indians (22.2 percent).

MIC and its leaders have come under intense pressure since the Nov 25 rally organised by Hindraf which drew some 30,000 disgruntled Indians to the streets.

Following this, speculation is rife that a large number of protest votes would be cast in favour of the opposition.

But Sothinathan remains unperturbed. He is confident that the local Indian community would support him come polling day on March 8.

“I have been on the ground and did not encounter any problems. The support from the community has been good. There could be isolated cases, but we are not concerned,” he said.

For the future, the incumbent said he wanted to work towards improving the infrastructure and beaches in the Teluk Kemang constituency.

“We need to build more good roads, and many projects are already ongoing,” he said, adding that being a local he has seen the development over the decades and chided the opposition for suggesting otherwise.

Despite his ministry’s office being located in the administrative capital of Putrajaya, Sothinathan continues to stay in Port Dickson, shuttling to and fro on a daily basis.

Asked why, he replied: “I grew up here and this is a better place to call home. It also allows me to be closer to the constituents.”

Hardcore poor

kamarul baharin abbasSothinathan also took a swipe at his PKR opponent Kamarul Abbas Baharain (right) for stating that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government was for the elites.

Citing himself as an example, the MIC leader said: “I am not an elite. I was from the hardcore poor group.”

“Both my parents were rubber tappers and I grew up in an estate before moving to a squatter area when I was studying in university.

“My parents always emphasised on the importance of education, and it is with sheer hard work and with the help of the government in terms of loans that I came up in life,” he added.

During his campaign trail on Tuesday, Sothinathan travelled far and wide addressing Chinese voters in the risibly named Tarzan estate and later Orang Asli voters in a remote enclave where even rubber and oil palm trees were not spared by the parties in their poster war.

He repeatedly stressed to the voters that the government cares for all the races and that the opposition was making unreasonable promises because it knows it cannot form the government.

He also accused the opposition of playing the racial card. “They tell one thing to the Malays, another to the Chinese and something else to the Indians.”

In return, the locals voiced out their grouses which ranged from the absence of streetlights to only air coming out of their water pipes.

Remain united

Addressing Indian voters at a function later in the night, Sothinathan cautioned the community on the perils of going against the government and also launched a verbal salvo against PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“We must address the problems from within. The government would not listen if we shout from the outside. We are a small community and must remain united,” he stressed to a rousing applause.

opposition ceramah s17 pj 270208 anwar ibrahimSothinathan also told his audience that he had seen many Indians carrying the PKR flag and posed the question: “But who is their leader? … Anwar Ibrahim.”

“He held many important positions before. He was once the deputy prime minister. But what did he do for the Indian community?

“Now, can we believe him when he says he wants to help the Indians when he is no longer in power?”

In the 2004 elections, Sothinathan defeated his PKR opponent Abdul Manap Sahardin with a majority of 17,777 votes. This time around, it is a three-cornered fight involving an independent candidate as well.

Asked if he believes that such a handsome win could be replicated, the incumbent replied: “I would leave that in the hands of my constituents. I believe I have given them my best. But there’s still more to be done, and I would do it.”

Elections Getting Colourful Or Dirty

Black ink, red paint - surely the elections are getting colourful. Get your cameras ready for some good shots.

Three days away from elections and the scene is changing, what more will happen now.

Rashid can rave and rant, but he is misusing the Election Commission, which ordinarily must help the people to vote and get a new government, but now the Commission is another obstacle the people must content with.

Samy Acted As God

Mahathir: Samy stifled Indian voices

The problems plaguing the Indian community could be resolved by removing MIC president S Samy Vellu who stifled Indian voices, said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday.

“(Indian Progressive Front president MG) Pandithan was got rid of, (former MIC deputy president S) Subramaniam was got rid of, K Pathmanaban died but of course before that, he was (former MIC vice president).

“That is his (Samy Vellu) way of doing things and of course the other voices cannot reach me. And of course, he doesn’t say there is this battling among the Indians,” he explained.

Samy Vellu who is the works minister and the longest serving Cabinet minister has been the MIC president since 1979 for 10 consecutive terms.

Mahathir also criticised Samy for creating excuses about bringing up Indian issues at the Cabinet level.

Now we know what ails the Indian Community. A single person, devoid of human feelings, calling himself an Indian, cheating them to the core, lying and misleading his own community, and above all a venomous snake who wants every Indian to believe he is giving them the kiss of life. Can anybody be so despicable. If you have seen Tamil films, many a time the villain is chased by the people, with none of his followers around him, running and running until he hurls himself from a hill to doom and the people rejoice the trouble creator is dead. That is in celluloid, in actual life, the curses, the anger, and the final verdict let the fellow wallow in his own filth is sufficient I think. With him must go his followers who hid the truth from the people, afraid they will lose their jobs. They, hopefully will take the cue and disappear or vamoose from the scene, failing which, they will suffer the same as Sami.

Lets us see what Samy did all these years, and I can imagine, he would have never thought all the filth and misery of his past doings will come to light. People in MIC knew but they were frightened of Samy knowing the fate of people who showed any resistance to the President.

He stifled Indian voices, he never allowed anyone to come up, it was never pro-Malay policy that caused the problems, he is the only channel of communication to the Prime Minister, misleading the PM everything is okay with the Indians. This Samy did with Mahathir, who is anytime a better man than Badawi. How much more would Samy would have done during the last 4 years with a Prime Minister with weakness in many departments. Samy would have had him eating from his hands.

Sam your time is up.

Chandra, apologise to Anwar

clipped from www.malaysiakini.com

‘Chandra, apologise to Anwar’

Richard Kamalanathan: This is in response to the remarks made by Dr Chandra Muzaffar about Anwar Ibrahim last week. The founder of Aliran was not instrumental in the formation of PKR (during the formative days there was no PKR but just Parti Keadilan).

It was difficult to talk to him. Once, at a Hindraf gathering in Sentul, he told me that my analysis of the Tamil situation was good but added: ‘You Indians must know exactly what you are asking for.

This Chandra Muzaffar @ Chandrasegaran Pillai considers himself not Indian just because he has converted. Chandra thinks he is a super-intellectual on human rights, philosophy and Islamic civilisation in Malaysia. He is not. I will blame Anwar for bringing him into the party. Chandra was the cause of the early troubles in PKR. He has no leadership qualities and had no political thinking. He was zero at politics.

  blog it
Chandra Muzaffar @ Chandrasegaran Pillai was with Anwar for 2 1/2 years, and during this time I am sure he would have known the ills perpetuated by Anwar against the Chinese and Indians. One is tempted to ask why then he joined up with him. Were his beliefs different then, or has he reformed to an extend that now he feels that Anwar will be a disaster. It will be good if he can comment on this.

His comment on Hindraf cannot go unchecked. If Hindraf was in the dark and did not know what it was asking for, does he not know that as an ex-Indian, and being well known for his academical ability, at least indicate what could be asked for. What a poor Indian; forgetting his past.

Melayu Umno dan Cina DAP bodoh

Tunku Abdul Rahman, Bapa Merdeka, refused to join Umno Baru in 1988, as did Tun Hussein Onn. Both these founding fathers of Malaysia died outside Umno. They wanted to have nothing to do with Umno. They went to their graves despising the new Umno, which they said no longer represented what Umno stood for.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

The government is saying: Melayu Umno bodoh! That is not what I am saying. That is what the government is saying. And because Melayu Umno bodoh, the government has cancelled the plan to mark the fingers of voters to prevent them from voting twice.

The government has spent millions to import this ink from India. But it seems others have also imported the same so the government has no choice but to cancel the plan to mark the voters’ fingers because these unknown people who have also imported this ink plan to trick the Umno Malays and sabotage them from voting.

According to the government that has declared Melayu Umno bodoh, those who have also imported the Indian ink plan to tell the government supporters, the Umno Malays, that they must first mark their fingers before they can vote. Then, when they go to the polling stations, they will not be allowed to vote since their fingers have already been marked with Indian ink.

Of course, the more cleverer opposition supporters will not allow their fingers to be marked before they vote. It is only the government supporters, the Melayu Umno bodoh, whose fingers will be marked. So the opposition supporters will still get to vote. It is the government supporters, the Melayu Unmo bodoh, who will not be allowed to vote because only these people would be stupid enough to allow their fingers to be marked before they vote rather than after they vote like the opposition supporters.

The government appears to have no confidence in its supporters. The government feels that its supporters are all stupid enough to fall for this ploy. The government appears to believe that the opposition supporters are not stupid enough to fall for this trick. Therefore, it is the government that will lose votes because only its supporters are stupid enough to allow their fingers to be marked before they vote while this will not happen to the opposition supporters.

The government feels that the Chinese and Indians will swing to the opposition. Many Malays will as well, of course. So the government needs as many Malay votes as it can get, in particular in the rural areas. The Chinese and Indians who will vote opposition will not fall for this trick. Neither will the Malays who vote for the opposition. It is only the Malays who vote for the government who are stupid enough to fall for this trick. So the government needs to cancel the plan to use Indian ink to mark the fingers of the voters lest the number of votes it gets is reduced due to trickery.

I am not a Malay who supports the government so I am not offended that the government thinks that Malays who support the government are stupid. Some Umno Malays want my citizenship withdrawn for criticising the government and which therefore, according to them, makes me a ‘traitor to the Malay race’. Yes, that’s right, if you oppose Umno then you are a traitor to the Malay race.

I have no problems if they wish to withdraw my citizenship. They can even withdraw my Melayuship as well if they want to. Hey, a Malay is automatically a Muslim. So if they wish to withdraw my Islamship as well that is also okay with me. Then, when the government declares that Melayu Umno bodoh, I would not be included in that group. There is, after all, some small blessing in losing your citizenship, Melayuship and Islamship. I would automatically lose my bodohship as well.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad probably agrees with what the government says. Mahathir said, a few months ago, that the trouble with the Malays is that even if they put a block of wood (tunggul kayu) as a candidate, as long as it is a Barisan Nasional candidate, the voters will vote for him or her.

The Malays are very emotional and unrealistic, lamented Mahathir on another occasion. The Chinese are more pragmatic, added Mahathir. Why can’t the Malays be more like the Chinese? sighed Mahathir.

Melayu mudah lupa, complained Mahahir on yet another occasion. Yes, Mahathir should know that by now. When I was Prime Minister, the Umno Malays would fall over each other in rushing to kiss my hands, Mahathir related during one public speaking event. Today, they are scared of being seen with me and will not even take my calls, lamented Mahathir. If that is not the best example of Melayu mudah lupa then I don’t know what is.

Mahathir received another dose of Melayu mudah lupa recently when Umno refused to allow his son to contest in Langkawi. Langkawi would not exist if not because of Mahathir. Mahathir made Langkawi into what it is today. But, today, Mahathir’s son is not welcome in Langkawi. Instead, they sent him to Jerlun to contest. But he was sent to Jerlun not to win. He was sent to Jerlun to be slaughtered. First they deny Mahathir’s son a seat in Langkawi. Then they send him to Jerlun to get slaughtered. Melayu Umno mudah lupa my dear Tun, Melayu Umno mudah lupa. But I am not a Melayu Umno, Tun, so I never lupa. And now Umno says that Melayu Umno bodoh as well.

Yesterday, I was in Penang. There were numerous ceramahs organised all over Penang. The police granted the organisers permits for these ceramahs but on condition that I would be barred from speaking. Haris Ibrahim and Ronnie Lui were also banned from speaking. I still spoke nevertheless. I spoke at Jalan Raja Uda. I was waiting for the police to come a calling and if they shout, “Hoi, you think this is your grandfather’s road or what?” I would have replied, “Yes it is, my grandfather was Raja Sir Tun Uda.”

Melayu Mudah lupa, as Mahathir says. My grandfather became Penang’s First Governor immediately after Merdeka on 31 August 1957. He was Governor for 15 years. Today, 50 years later, the grandson of the First Governor is barred from speaking in Penang.

Anyway, my grandfather never joined Umno. None of my family did. My father supported what he perceived as the first true multi-racial party at that time, Gerakan. And he proudly declared that he voted for Gerakan in the 11 May 1969 general election.

Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Hussein were great men. And these great men turned their backs on Umno. I would rather follow the footsteps of great men such as those than support a party that declares Melayu Umno bodoh and then cancels the plan to mark the fingers of voters because government supporters would allow their fingers to be marked before they vote instead of after.

Actually, cancelling the plan to mark the fingers of voters is not about Melayu Umno bodoh at all. I know many Umno Malays and I have great respect for them. Not all Umno Malays are slimeballs and scumbags, just like not all opposition people are angels. You have good and bad people in any society. One must not be labelled good or bad based on their race, religion or political affiliation but based on the person that they are.

Barisan Nasional is running scared. According to intelligence agency reports, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah and Penang will fall to the opposition. Even Johor, which has never seen a single seat fall to the opposition thus far, may see the loss of ten seats or more. That would have been unheard of even just one year ago. On last count, the opposition may capture up to 90 seats in Parliament. It needs 75 seats to deny Barisan Nasional its two-thirds majority in Parliament.

The Chinese and Indian votes are a forgone conclusion. The Chinese and Indians are voting opposition. Barisan Nasional has to work on the Malay seats to stay in power. So they will raise racial and religious issues these next 48 hours to frighten the Malays into voting Barisan Nasional.

Tonight, the Deputy Prime Minister ‘revealed’ a ’secret pact’ between PAS and DAP. They hope the Chinese will get scared and abandon DAP lest PAS gets into power and ‘chops of people’s hands’. Najib has reduced Islam to merely ‘chopping of hands’. That, to Najib, is what Islam is all about, hand-chopping.

Are all Chinese bank robbers? Will we see every Chinese in Malaysia without hands once PAS comes into power? Do not the Chinese resent the insinuation that there is not an honest Chinese in Malaysia and all Chinese will go to their graves with no hands? I hope the Chinese are not that stupid and will be able to figure out that if it is crooks who will suffer severed limbs then it will be those who walk in the corridors of power who will suffer this since they are the crooks and scoundrels. If I were Chinese, I would vote PAS just so that PAS can come into power and we can enjoy the pleasure of seeing all our ex-ministers walking around without hands.

Anyway, PAS is contesting just 60 seats so there is no way a party that contests only 60 seats can win 150 seats. And PAS will need 150 seats to amend the Federal Constitution of Malaysia and turn Malaysia into an Islamic State and then start cutting off the hands of crooks and bank robbers. The government has said Melayu Umno bodoh. I hope, after 8 March 2008, I do not have to start saying Cina DAP bodoh. I hope that the DAP Chinese will read the statement from PAS that they are not pursuing the Islamic State agenda any longer. They can’t anyway, even if they win all the 60 seats they are contesting — and they can never win all the 60 seats to begin with.

Najib says that the Chinese should reject DAP because DAP is working with PAS and PAS supports an Islam State. Najib is therefore saying that he too does not support an Islamic State. Najib says that the Malays should reject PAS because PAS is working with DAP and DAP supports a Secular State. Najib is therefore saying that he too does not support a Secular State. To the Malays, Najib says he does not support a Secular State and, to the Chinese, he says he does not support an Islamic State. So what then does Najib support? Well, it all depends on who he talks to. If he talks to the Chinese, he will whack the Islamic State and, if he talks to the Malays, he will whack the Secular State. Najib thinks that Melayu Umno bodoh and Cina DAP bodoh as well. Yang pandai Najib seorang saja.

Expect more of this the next 48 hours as Polling Day gets closer. Desperate people will do desperate things. And the loss of five states plus 90 seats in Parliament requires desperate measures. That will be what will happen these next 48 hours. Tapi jangan Melayu dan Cina semua jadi bodoh. India sudah celek mata. Melayu dan Cina maseh tutup mata ke?

Ink Cancellation Not Solely Because Of Police Advice
“If we were to proceed (with the use of the ink), it could be deemed we are violating the rights of voters as we would be forcing them to undergo the ink marking,” he said when interviewed on a special election talkshow aired by private television station TV3 Wednesday night.
He added that he very much wanted to have it used during this election but the legal experts warned against it on the grounds of voters’ right.

Rashid earns this title with distinction, No ink, first he says security and public order, then voters and his staff will be bribed and even if a voter comes bathed in black ink he will be allowed to vote, and now it is violating rights of voters.

Rashid has earned this title beating everybody, including Badawi and his name will go down in the annals of history.
