Samy: Not shoe, they threw atomic bomb
Samy: Not shoe, they threw atomic bomb
Beh Lih Yi | Feb 26, 08 6:34pm
MIC president S Samy Vellu today denied that shoes were thrown at him during a recent visit to Penang.
Quizzed on this at a press conference in Butterworth, he quipped: "They threw an atomic bomb at me…I threw the atomic (bomb) back."
However, he conceded that an argument erupted between him and the local Indian community when he visited Perai, in Butterworth, two weeks ago.
"Nothing happened. They didn’t throw a screwdriver at me. If they threw a screwdriver, I will take the screwdriver and use it for my car," he said, drawing laughter from local MIC leaders who were present.
Samy Vellu was met by reporters at the Batu Kawan MIC election operations room – one of his three stops at Indian-majority seats during a one-day visit to Penang.
He was asked to comment on rumours that an Indian woman had thrown a shoe at him when
he was speaking to the crowd in Perai, which is an Indian-majority seat, on Feb 16.
According to rumours, the shoe did little to unnerve the seasoned politician, who purportedly replied to the crowd that he was not afraid of an atomic bomb, let alone a shoe. This was said to have resulted in a second shoe being thrown at him.
The media had reported that some 60 people blocked Samy Vellu’s car while he was leaving the function and criticised him for not helping the Indian community.
It was also reported that the MIC president was stuck in the car for about 30 minutes before being whisked away to safety by policemen.
Argument over arrests
Commenting further on the incident, the 72-year-old politician said there was an argument over the mass arrests in connection with the ‘roses’ demonstration organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).
"They wanted me to tell the prime minister to release all of them, I said I can’t do that because I don’t have the power, so that’s the argument.
"Of course during the argument, somebody ‘bang, bang, bang’, all ‘talk, talk, talk’. We all human beings, when someone gets angry, they lose their heads," he said.
On that note, Samy Vellu promised that he would not prevent the people from approaching him to air their views.
"When I come here. I am an Indian, they are also Malaysian Indians. I have to allow them to talk to me, I don’t want anyone to block (the people)," he said.
Soon after this, an Indian trader was reportedly stopped by MIC members from approaching Samy Vellu during his brief visit to a market in Perai at his second stop in Penang.
According to eyewitnesses, the man who tried to approach Samy Vellu was shoved aside – and almost fell – while police personnel told the man to raise the issue at a nearby school hall, where the MIC president was holding a meet-the-people session.
Heavy police presence
Samy Vellu was escorted by a heavy police presence and flanked by MIC state leaders throughout his visit.
In Batu Kawan, at least six patrol cars and about 30 policemen accompanied him throughout his 45-minute programme with some 200 Indians from a residential area there.
Security was stepped up when he arrived in Perai, where a truck of light strike force personnel were also deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
The hall where he held his meet-the-people session was half-empty and some of those who turned up were also spotted in Batu Kawan earlier.
On his way out of the hall, Samy Vellu stopped several times when the locals tried to seek his help to solve their problems.
During his last stop at Bagan Dalam, a woman and her family tried in vain to seek the MIC president’s help to secure the release of her son who is being held under the Emergency Ordinance.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman later hurled abusive words at the MIC leader as Samy Vellu was getting into his car.
What is the point of releasing a new 2008 manifesto to promise the people this and that, while the Malaysians are robbed by unscrupulous scum of the gutters to benefit some well heeled politician and cronies of the ruling party. It is ironic on one hand the Government cheats the people by making promises they can’t keep but close one eye to the manipulations of individuals. These individuals commit the heinous crime against Malaysians under the watchful eye of the Government, which stands as a guardian for wrongs committed against the people. Without battling an eyelid the Government then wants the people to vote for them to continue robbing the people at will. What justice is this. To aggravate the matter the Government confirms the whole project is cancelled when the people knew about the scheme. But now the project gets the go ahead. Is this not plain robbery. Is not the Government acting as a proxy for Muhammad son of Muhammad and Anuar Zaini.

Practically the whole country is focused on the coming general election due to be held on 8 March 2008. But while we look the other way, distracted by the intense election campaigning, some parties are quietly about to make RM4 billion from a property development that involves a piece of land belonging to the rakyat. And rakyat here means 26 million Malaysians, 11 million or so who are registered voters. Sadly though, only 8 million who will come out to vote this election while the other 3 million will just stay home to watch television.
But it will not be 26 million Malaysians who will profit from this development. It will be handful of people who walk in the corridors of power. And these handful of people are the man with two Muhammad’s in his name who would like to be Malaysia’s future Deputy Prime Minister, Anuar Zaini who runs the Malaysian government’s propaganda machinery also known as Bernama, and the cronies to the powers-that-be.
In June last year, it was reported that a company owned by Hong Leong’s Quek Leng Chan will be taking over the land which the Universiti Malaysia sits and will turn into a new township. The university would then be relocated to Sepang.
There was a big hue and cry and the government flatly denied such a thing was in the cards.
Everything went quiet for awhile. Part of the objection to this proposal was because of the ’sacred’ status and sentimental value of Malaysia’s first university. But what was even more of an objection was the fact that a Chinese company was going to become the beneficiary to a very valuable piece of government asset.
To quell the outrage, the government quickly denied such a thing was being planned. But the denial was a lie and merely meant to quieten things down for awhile so that alternative plans could be put into place.
Realising that the university land was a ‘goldmine’, other parties jumped in and last week they announced that the university would sell off 27.5 acres of its under-utilised land for a price of RM312 million or for a value of RM200 million plus a share of the developer’s profit, whichever is higher. However, what was not revealed was that the Selangor State Government, which is supposed to be a joint-venture partner, would get only 10% of the deal while 90% will go to Muhammad son of Muhammad and Anuar Zaini. The state government company is merely a front to give an impression that this is a government deal and to avoid any more controversy while in actual fact certain individuals are going to profit from the entire arrangement.
Yes, while Malaysians sleep, while Malaysians get distracted by the 8 March 2008 general election, those connected to those who walk in the corridors of power are going to make billions while the government will get pittance in return. Is this not one more of so many reasons to cut Barisan Nasional down to size by denying it its 92% hegemony in Parliament?
It is time Malaysians demonstrate outrage and shout loudly, “NO MORE!” And this demonstration must come in the form of no longer allowing Barisan Nasional a landslide victory in the coming general election and by denying it its 92% hegemony in Parliament.

Government announcements are bandied about to get voters, but whether they will be fulfilled, the people face a Hobson’s choice.
