Writer KillBill07 writing in Malaysiakini under the heading “Hindraf rally: Why did 30,000 turn up?” today, has written a fantastic piece relating to Hindraf. This letter sets up all the aspirations of the Indians to get their dues and not grab what belongs to the Malays, Chinese and others. This is a parallel which I think, also reflects the sectors of the Malaysians who have been not treated equally. I have been saying the primary reason for the Hindraf rally was the destruction of temples, and the ultimate demolition of the Padang Jawa temple incensed the Indians to such an extend that there was this good turn out. The letter continues:
“It has been about a week since the Hindraf rally and the dust has just begun to settle. This is a good time to ponder about the significance and impact of this gathering on the future of Indian Malaysians and also on Malaysia’s future as a whole. Nobody can deny that, like Bersih, the Hindraf rally may be a significant milestone that could turn this country’s direction.
Who are these people who turned out in thousands on that Sunday? Firstly, they are not criminals or gangsters as the police and government portray them. I also do not believe that all of them fall into the “poor” category. I am sure a lot of them are in the middle-income group.
I believe the 30,000 people (as Malaysiakini reported) that were present during the rally are a sample of the Indian Malaysian majority who are totally dissatisfied and disillusioned with the MIC and the Barisan National government. It would not be far-fetched to say that the majority of MIC grassroots themselves are supporting the Hindraf cause either openly or in secret.
So, why did they do this? They have been blinded all these years and now, the blindfolds have been removed. Indians usually blame the current situation on their fate (vithi or thale yeluthu in Tamil). It is in their nature not to blame others but themselves. That is why they continue to give undivided support to the MIC and BN all these years. The Chinese votes are always divided between MCA and DAP. The Malay votes get divided between Umno and PAS. The Indians votes hardly get divided. For the BN, Indian votes have always been considered as “in the bag” or a sure thing.
Unfortunately, this undivided loyalty did not bring them much good. Hindraf has succeeded in making them see that they, as Malaysians, deserve to be given opportunities to better themselves, come out of poverty and the pathetic living conditions especially in the estates.
The Indians themselves see that as each day goes by, they are falling behind the other races. They realise that their present situation will only get worse especially when the playing field is not level. The Malaysian Indians realise that they are also stakeholders of the country and they too have rights. Even so, all these reasons would not be enough for the thousands to put aside their fears and make their voices heard on Nov 25.
What triggered this overwhelming reaction? The last straw was the recent demolitions of Hindu temples. The government acted insensitively towards the Indians’ sacred objects, even if the temples were built illegally. The Indians understood that they were insignificant and their feelings were not important. They were made to feel like pariahs in their own land (yes, this is their land). They are asking “Why didn’t the MIC come to their rescue?”
If the mighty Samy Vellu and the MIC are not even respected by the government, who is going to protect them from being stomped and trampled upon? Hindraf is not the opposition’s stooge, as the government claims. They are ordinary Indians with no political agenda who have stepped up to voice their opposition when the MIC decided to be silent. Their emergence coincides with the recent surge of temple demolitions, not the coming elections as the government would want you to believe.
The two recent massive rallies have put the government in a tight spot. They would prefer to call the general elections before Anwar Ibrahim becomes eligible to run in April 2008. At the same time, the rallies show the deep dissatisfaction of the people, irrespective of race, with the current establishment. In addition to unfair electoral practices and the demolition of places of worship, the government is also in bad light for the recent price surge of goods, petrol and toll.
In these hard times, people cringe to hear that the Pahang state government has spent RM48,000 of taxpayers money for a single-digit car licence plate. To make things worse for BN, the “Lingamgate” scandal exposed a possible corrupted judiciary. All these events have resulted in Abdullah Ahmad Badawi having a hard time pinning an election date.
MIC has always wanted to be the one and only path that brings assistance and improvements for the Indian community. S Samy Vellu wants to be the only link between the Indian people and the prime minister. There should be no other avenues which is why he protests vehemently whenever other Indian parties such as IPF and MUIP apply to join Barisan National.
He is probably insecure that members of his party will leave him high and dry and join other Indian parties if they are in the Barisan coalition. The possibility of MIC becoming a smaller Indian party within the Barisan coalition is a nightmare that he would not like to face. If that happens, he would lose his ministerial post and his god-like status in the Indian community.
The Indian people’s support for Hindraf is a slap in the face for him and MIC. Current MIC incumbents in both parliament and state seats are already feeling the ground giving way below them. In a Malaysiakini video, I heard one of the Hindraf protesters say, “We’ll show it to them when we go to the polls!” If the elections were to be held today, many MIC members of parliament and state assemblymen will be dethroned, perhaps with the exception of Cameron Highlands MP Devamany.
He was against the Hindraf rally in the Al Jazeera interview and now, seeing the huge response and possible implications to his political future in Cameron Highlands, MP Devamany is flip-flopping on the issue. Even Samy Vellu, who was once so against the Hindraf gathering, is now singing the same tune that the government may have not “done enough” for the Indian community. But all they could come up with was a hotline and a committee. The things that these people would say and do to cling on to the slippery poles of power, what a shame.
Hindraf should be proud of what they have achieved so far. They have managed to highlight how low the Indians have been feeling through the lawsuit and the rally. Their claims are not racist in nature. They are not saying “Don’t give to the Malays and the Chinese.” What they are saying is, “Give to us also. Do not forget us. Treat us like citizens, treat us fairly. Do not marginalise us anymore.” They are saying enough is enough. They may be directly faulting the constitution for their current predicament, but they are indirectly blaming the Malaysian government.
What Hindraf wants is a government that will treat all Malaysians fairly, irrespective of race and religion. This is also what PKR and Anwar Ibrahim is championing. Their goals are one and the same. The present government cannot change. Change is almost impossible when you have been in power for far too long.
Hindraf’s ultimate goal should be for Malaysia to turn a new page towards a new government that will end corruption and absurd spending, implement sound fiscal policies, keep the judiciary independent, raise the standard of living for everyone and most importantly, instill a sense of belonging in all Malaysians.
Hindraf and Indian Malaysians in general having lost faith in MIC and BN. They need to work hand in hand with PKR and the opposition to achieve this. They should reach out and welcome these brave Malaysians unto their fold. There is no shame in doing this as both parties have a common purpose. The tides are changing. I see the light at the end of a dimly-lit tunnel.”
Besides this letter there is another matter I want to share with you. Have you seen the video clip relating to the visit of Datuk Seri Samy Velly to Padang Jawa after the temple demolition.
See the reception the people gave him. Is MIC relevant now? I leave it to you to decide.

This video is really good. At last the anger and anguish buried all along being released at our ‘legend’- sagaaptham.
Even, Taj Mahal’s Shah Jahan did not get to be great- since after he emptied the coffers, the decline of the Mughal empire begun.
Catholic church confers sainthood only after one’s death, sometime takes generations to identify one.
Only history can make one a sagaaptham- a legend.
Out of touch of reality- the real ground swell- this guy wants to be great in his own lifetime. He believed he is one by simply crossing out all challenges.
Until he was born, there were no Samy Velus’ only Velusamy or Velsamy- probably he is a legend for his special given name.
Mahathir’s legend status was checked by Anwar Ibrahim; permanently dented and that went to ashes.
Would it be an exaggeration if Samy’s credibility has been forever checked out by Hindraf?
Good piece of work. I am sure Samy Vellu would have been bashed has there no one guarding around him. Thank God.
Some of the bloggers are claiming HINDRAF is cheating malaysian Indians by promising money. They never had money all this while. But what the government did..and continueosly did was to hit in the core of their fauth and life. Samy Vellu you better leave now if you have any self respect. Enough damage is done. You have just behaved like an office boy to the rulling bosses and sold your community.
Enough of body snatching , enough of bullying by the extremist. HINRAF has rightfuly pointed out this. So for those of you who call HINDRAF extremist stop it. Who is extremist.Who started all this religious issues? Are Indians not entiltled to live in peace with their faith and have a decent life in the so called rich Malaysia?
MIC has definately failed the Indians from the beginning. Now after 50 years all hell broke loose.
This is a really a good briefing………..what was written above are good….dear friends Malay or Chinese mostly Malay fren dont get emotional…..actually Indian and Malay are poor…wat is HINDRAF asking stop DEB and give everybody same……Malay frens u must thing we as rakyat nothing get anything what was in the DEB. The person enjoying the benefit only the st*p*d UMNO leaders and the gengs…..we rakyat live as a poor ppl. We must think as long rakyat the BN keep poor, stupid , no protest this BN will happy and they can be richer and more richer…..THINK DEAR FRENS DONT FIGHT EACH OTHER….IF RAKYAT FIGHT MORE BENEFIT FOR THEM….
The video potrayed the true emotions of the affected people. Seated in front of a low energy computer monitor, we could still feel the heat and anger. If some malaysians can get emotionally worked up over RTM’s Berita Luar Negara broadcast and protest in front of the US Embassy over “attrocities” at Israel/Palestine and the states of former East Bloc (Bosnia, croatia etc) where there are none of our relatives or people we know, we should be able to understand and accept the “attrocities” at Kampung Jawa Temple and the tempers that flared.
Shhhhhh!, shhhhhhh! Keep quiet, keep quiet, was the message from the inner circle. The response was of course the four lettered words in tamil.
We saw one guy in particular, more violently screaming and running around hush-ing the residents. Works for a cinema chain, I presumed.
A repeated viewing (and listening) of the video would enable one to know and understand that the community had been silent and tolerant over similar injustices the last few decades because the leaders had been respected and their requests (orders) blindly followed. Yes, the orders to just shut up. Alas, times have changes and this wind is not only blowing over this land but over the world.
We saw crocodile’s tears even before he witnessed the demolition in action. How come? My friend commented: A good newsreader but a better drama-man.
One crony told the crowd: “He (obviously referring to SV) came with a good decision. So (you people) don’t get that screwed up.” How did this crony know of the “good decision”, even before the VIP saw the demolition? Was all that a big-time drama with super actors ? Did they really know beforehand, that the demolition could not be stopped and the appearance was to pretend a concern? Not only god knows, they too know the truth.
The classic comment (heard but not seen) by someone was: Those vocal (residents ) have taken “tanni” (liquor) and making noise. Ha ha ha. This is what we always hear about this community when one talks aloud, or raises issues, when a collapse of a meeting, a beggar sleeping in a park or corridoror, or even at road accident. Comments by “instant saints”.
Good video shot but can improve further.
In his anger maybe he gave the go ahead to the MB.Never trust semi value. The toll man.
he was speechless for once……………..the so called great mouthpiece of the indians in malaysia. I think we are seeing the end of mic for sure. good riddance
It is a simple hypothesis can be derived the entire “MISHAPS” to the “Long Ruling Goverment”. The goverment is trying very hard to stage a “Political Drama” whereby the Indian Community via HINDRAF is levelling the half century manipulations with “Law and Nothing More Than Country’s Law”. So, It is time for all parties including BN GANGSTERS to understand whether the “Law Is Above Political Dramas OR Political Dramas Are Above The Law”. If the country’s law is above all including political dramas then keep all the political weapons within their Drama Company; Similarly , If they are brave to conclude that political dramas are above the law then take your political weapons to slaughter the country’s law prior to the Indian Community! Simple decision making process isn’t it. However , remember that it isn’t simple anymore…!
He hascheated the indians before he became a full minister he promised to erect houses in every distric by Jaya Koperasi I can still renmember in
1976 my mother paid rn1500.00 hoping he will biuilt houses in kluang johor not only my mother but many other indians no houses was built but he collected money from everybody . he has never acheived anything for the indians but claims he is an acheived leader . if he is born for a mother he should quit all his post and should beg for his food from every indian just like a monkhood
Well,, samy has fail miserably in his job, duty and post. If you know m he had lost touch rather the \indian has lost him. But he is a self proclaim leader… Why MIC is samy,, without samy there is no MIC. He is another Mr marcos isnt… Now we are afraid he is detrimental / danger to the indian. If you had followed his speech. Tht rascal say,, indian are alright, they have been manipulate by Hindraf, all this backlashing The once person who was supposely be leading the indian,, has caused such a damage to the indian community. His ways has downgraded indians in this country. The sooner he goes of,,the better it is. Indian can move on since we have new sense of expectation and direction… Indian are much better without fat SAmy.
MIC has betrayed all the Malaysian Indian by not listening to the plight of the poor Indians. They are more concern about their political agenda and non-hurting policies of their UMNO supreme leader. While UMNO surely not concern about non-malays future in this country for they have threatened us with their dagger, ISA, riot, arrest, revoke of citizenship and many more. They have sent us a very clear message that they will go on with these style of governing in spite of anything. This style of governing is not called democracy but communism. It is worse than what the Israeli doing on Palestine people, silent ethnic cleansing in Malaysia. We Malaysian just wearing a skin of Unity and Democracy but the reality are the ugliness of our country full of “rakyat” abuse backed up with corruption and misuse of power. We need a change, a change in everything that will save our country from sinking and these have been said loudly by many brave Malaysians on street. God bless them.
I guess it’s time for all those who have lost faith in MIC and it’s leadership to put more preassure for the present leader to stepdown from his party and ministerial post. Many countries pass a no confidence vote to dethrone their leaders when they loose confidence in their leadership, likewise we can do it here too. Firstly the jokers who are sitting in the MIC committee are elected representatives of the public and we have actualy put them there to voice our needs to the gov. But once they get there they forget us and I guess we’ve been taken for a ride and those who are there are getting richer day by day.
We should do another rally outside the MIC Head Quaters when they have their general assembly to show the great samy velu that we can do better without him. Imagine having 20,000 Indians outside his office……. what an impact would that be……
Thank you Aarvidi for complimenting me on the article I wrote for Malaysiakini. It is all straight from the heart. There are many more articles in my blog, that came from the same place, my heart. Please check it out.

Hai KillBill07:
Thanks for the invitation. I have posted some comments on your blog.
Even though emotions went high, the Indians kept their cool due to Hindraf calling them to be peaceful at all times.

[...] Hindraf has arrived to challenge MIC and although the former is a green horn, the highest sympathy the Indians have for them is beyond doubt.
