In November 2006 we were told the cost of the Royal Palace is RM400 million and it will have:

  • Garden for the public
  • Palace building
  • Supporting buildings
  • Housing for palace staff
  • Police
  • Security Office
  • Mini Army Camp
  • Double story Entrance from Jalan Duta and parking area

You can read these here.

Today while replying to a question in Parliament we are told by Sami Vellu that:

“Replying to Salahuddin Ayob (PAS-Kubang Kerian), Samy Vellu said the cost to build the palace complex to replace Istana Negara was RM450mil with another RM200mil to build the quarters, security features, multi-level underground car park and others.

He said the cost of the new palace complex was not RM1bil as stated by Salahuddin.

“The Government has decided that the cost to build the new palace complex be capped at RM650mil and it cannot be more than that,” he added.”

Were the calculations done with fingers?

I had a soft spot for this guy from the day he was suspended from Parliament for 3 months in 2005 and felt he had been badly treated by his own political bosses viz UMNO and MIC.. MIC, the Indian political party, headed by Mr Sami, has always professed to help the Indians and Sothinathan, the MIC Vice President  lost his cool by fighting for Indian students in the CSMU university of Russia. The whole brunt and brutal force of the Government (UMNO) bore on him like a bolt of lightning and he was the proverbial lamb that was sacrificed for the sake of the incompetence and malaise of the Education ministry. He was treated like an outcast, though it was very obvious, the Education ministry cared two hoots for the higher education of the Indians.

What irked me most, his erstwhile leader the great Sami , who under normal circumstances would have, true to his name as the Sami, would have risen to the occasion and become a Hindu Sami with the drawn sword, the exposed fangs, and would have danced the dance of the heavens and this should have silenced the whole affair – failed to do so. Sami lost his voice. Yes, I repeat Sami lost his voice. At least the DAP from a humanitarian viewpoint raised some objections, but as usual the bullies, the political masters had their pound of flesh and Sothinathan was in hibernation for 3 months. Well, fast forward to 2008, and what do you find, a more seasoned, calloused politician, Sothinathan wants to beat up a woman MP. Read what a another blogger friend says:

“MIC’s deputy minister S.Sothinathan has done Malaysia proud with another first.
In classic MIC culture, Sothinathan behaved like a toddy-drinking, wife-beating rubber tapper by challenging Batu Gajah MP Miss Fong Po Kuan to a brawl outside the Chamber yesterday during the winding-up of the 2008 Budget committee debate on his Ministry.”

Haven’t we have had our Indian leaders brawling lately, the MIC and the PPP brawls, where the leaders just forgot they are leaders. And now Sothinathan. He has also distinguished him self with scum of the gutters Umno backbenchers Radin Bung Mokhtar (BN-Kinabatangan) and Mohd Said Yusuf (BN-Jasin). Sothinathan has arrived!
